A VILLAGE is holding a fun day to celebrate progress on a new park for the community – which should be accessible to disabled and able-bodied children.

The campaign to raise enough money to overhaul the communal recreation area in Morton-on-Swale, near Northallerton is celebrating having reached its target, after raising about £120,000.

Work has already begun on site and a fun day to celebrate the progress will take place in the village on Sunday, May 21.

The park is designed to provide something for everybody within the local community.

Kirsty McGready said: “Play park committee, supported by Morton-On-Swale Parish Council have been working to replace the old play park with a fully accessible park – with something for everyone, no matter what age or ability.”

The park includes a sensory garden, including a willow tunnel, created with the help of Northdale Horticulture, which provides training and work-based activities for adults with learning difficulties.

There are also dedicated areas for teenagers, adults, children and toddlers, as well as specific equipment for young people with disabilities, including a floor trampoline, cradle swing and wheelchair-friendly roundabout.

The fun day runs from 11am until 4pm and will give people the chance to see how the work is progressing, ahead of an official opening later in summer.

There will also be a bouncy castle, face painting, hot food and beer. It is being supported by Linden Homes, Paul Thompson Builders and Image Playgrounds and builds upon the success of last year’s event.
