PRIMARY school children demonstrated how they could “change the world” after being introduced to inspirational and world-changing figures.
Children at Knayton Primary School, near Northallerton, came up with their own inspiring ideas when they were challenged to come up with something they could do to make a difference, after learning about people such as Martin Luther King.
Pupils from each class decided they would like to host a day to raise money for their chosen charities and came up with a variety of ideas for fundraising. Parents were then invited into the school to take part and help raise money.
One class held a “Knayton Bake Off” where children baked cakes at home and entered them in the cost for a £2 entry fee. Parents then sampled each cake and voted for their favourite. The winner won £5 to give to a charity of their choice.
There was also a sponsored silence, a “chocolate tumble”, a book sale and sponsored non-stop running.
The day raised £385 which was shared between Save the Children, NSPCC, Send a Friend to School and the Thirsk Clock project.
Teacher Stephen Butterworth said: “Our ‘We can change the world’ project had a great influence on the children’s understanding of the global issues.
“It was inspirational to see how much our children care about the world we live in and how passionate they felt about making a difference.
“The children truly believe that anyone with a strong mind-set can make a difference in the world and achieve their dreams, this was shown throughout this Big Idea topic.”
