HUNDREDS of pairs of glasses are being used to help people living in poverty in Africa after being donated by customers at a North Yorkshire opticians.

Specsavers in Northallerton collected about 1,500 unwanted pairs of glasses from its customers in 2016. They are being given to Vision Aid Overseas, a charity which enables people in poverty to access affordable glasses and eye care. The collected donations are recycled and the money made is used to provide eyecare in developing countries.

Over the past year, staff and customers at Specsavers Northallerton brought a record-number of old glasses to the store for donation.

Store director Ruth Sinclair said: “We would like to thank all of our customers who helped us in this project recently and please do keep bringing in your glasses. Every single one will make a difference."
