THE achievements of Olympic and Paralympic medal-winning athletes from a district with a population of about 90,000 have been celebrated with the unveiling of a town centre tribute.

Northallerton’s Town Square has been renamed Olympic Square in honour of Para-rower Laurence Whitleley, from the town – who took the gold medal in Rio for the trunks and arms mixed double sculls – and three-day eventer Nicola Wilson, of nearby Morton on Swale, who took silver with the equestrian team in 2012.

The pair have unveiled plaques, made by Dales of Thirsk and installed by Foden Spence Construction, of Stokesley, commemorating their successes, alongside a plaque for rower Kat Copeland, of Stokesley, who took gold in 2012.

Ahead of the opening ceremony, Ms Wilson described the move as a huge honour. She said: “I’m so grateful to all the people that helped me achieve my dream on winning a medal at an Olympic Games and also a huge thank you to UK Sport and the National Lottery for their incredible support.”

Hambleton District Council has said it will mark future successes by local Paralympian and Olympians by inserting plaques into the pavement of the square, creating a walk of fame.

“The achievements of our local athletes over the last two games have made us all proud to live in Hambleton,” said Council leader, Councillor Mark Robson.

“Laurence, Kat and Nicola are a testament to hard work and determination. They are already inspiring a new generation of young athletes just starting out on their sporting journeys.”
