WORK to repair structural damage to a Grade II listed bridge following a crash is set to start.

Motorists have been warned the structural repairs to Morton Bridge, over the River Swale, near Northallerton, are scheduled to begin next Monday and last for two weeks.

The work will repair damage to the parapet wall of the bridge, which was designed by prolific 18th century architect John Carr, who was best known for Buxton Crescent and Harewood House and considered to be the leading architect in the North.

The bridge, which is thought was completed in 1803, features four segmental arches and triangular-section cutwaters.

North Yorkshire County Council said temporary traffic signals will operate on the main route from Northallerton to Bedale and the A1(M) during the working hours at the site, from about 9am to 4pm, but will not be in place during the morning and evening rush hours.

Councillor Don Mackenzie, the authority's executive member for highways, said: “We appreciate that this work will cause disruption, but every effort will be made to minimise the inconvenience and complete the work on schedule.”
