YOUNGSTERS from Northallerton have joined hundreds of guides and scouts across the UK who are becoming Dementia Friends.

Twelve girl guides from 2nd Northallerton Guides, aged between ten and 12-years-old took part in an awareness session run by Alzheimer’s Society support worker Chris Riley.

Dementia Friends is an Alzheimer’s Society initiative that helps people of all ages to better understand dementia and take action to help people affected by condition.

Mr Riley said: “We were delighted that the Northallerton Girl Guides have become Dementia Friends.

“One in three young people know someone with dementia and learning about it can make it easier for young people to cope and understand while improving the life of the person living with dementia.

“Dementia affects over 2,000 people in Hambleton and Richmondshire and children and young people play an important role in helping people living with dementia to feel included and understood in their communities.”
