A DONATION from a bank has brought some Christmas cheer to mothers and children living in a North Yorkshire women’s refuge.

The TSB bank in Northallerton has donated £100 to the Broadacres-run women’s refuge, which provides a home and security to women who have suffered domestic violence. The bank has also provided books and unwanted Christmas and birthday presents for the children in the refuge

Jayne Collinson, manager of the Northallerton branch of TSB, said: “We did our research and we found out about the refuge, so we are delighted to be able to support such a worthwhile service that makes such a difference to peoples’ lives.”

Michaela Thomas, refuge co-ordinator, said: “The donation from TSB is very much appreciated and we will be using the money to take the mums and children to a pantomime.

“The books and toys are also very welcome. This year we have received so many kind donations from members of the public, it’s been amazing.

“Very often we get women coming to the refuge who have had to leave the family home with literally only the clothes they are wearing, so being able to provide clothes, toiletries and toys helps to bring a little bit of normality back to their lives.”

Among the other recent donations were 14 shoeboxes full of gifts, such as toiletries and cosmetics, for the women and gift bags filled with treats for all the families.

These were provided by Northallerton Mowbray Rotary Club (Pat Martin and Janet Campton), which also donated £46 raised from a raffle.

The women’s refuge run by Broadacres, and supported by North Yorkshire County Council, provides accommodation and services for single women, and women with children who have been, or who are, affected by domestic abuse.
