A GROUP of knitters have got their needles clicking to help women recovering from breast cancer.

Members of the Knit and Natter group that meets on Fridays in the bistro at Barker's Northallerton shop are supporting the department store's Bosom Buddies campaign to make light and comfortable padding out of a soft cotton yarn.

The bosom buddies, as they have been dubbed by organisers, will be given to women who have undergone mastectomies.

Organiser Jane Hunter, from Barkers department store, said: “We saw the idea for bosom buddies on TV, when a woman had found the breast form she had been given from the hospital was uncomfortable and a friend decided she needed some shape to pop into her bra so knitted a soft shaped ‘bosom buddy’ for her to wear until she was more comfortable.

“The bosom buddies come in all designs and sizes and are a godsend to women who have had breast cancer so we think they will be very popular.

"They are super-soft, so they are very comfortable against skin, especially where there is scarring or if the area is feeling tender following radiotherapy or a mastectomy."

The Bosom Buddies campaign will be launched as part of a fundraising day for the Friarage Breast Cancer Support Group at Barkers Kitchen on October 14.
