A MAIN road between Darlington and Northallerton has been closed in both directions following a serious road accident.

North Yorkshire Police are currently at the scene on the A167 at Little Smeaton, which happened at around 10.25am on Tuesday and involved two cars.

The driver of the Peugot 406 and his two young passengers are being taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough with serious injuries, and the male driver of the Qashqai suffered minor injuries.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, press 1 and pass information on to the force control room, quoting reference number NYP-11082015-0131.

It is believed there was a tractor in the vicinity of the collision at the time and police would like to speak to the driver of that tractor as he may be able to assist with the investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident.

The road is closed in both directions and it is expected to remain closed for at least another hour. Drivers are urged to avoid the area and take an alternative route.
