A HAIR and beauty salon is to help give a children's centre a makeover - by offering appointments for charity.

Shine Hair and Beauty, in Northallerton, is hosting a charity evening for the Specialist Children's Services Centre, whose professionals work with young people with a range of difficulties in Hambleton and Richmondshire.

Salon owner Wilson Derbyshire has pledged to donate all proceeds from appointments booked between 5pm and 7pm on August 14 to the centre, which will go towards its redecoration and a new mural that has been commissioned through Thirsk Rural Arts.

A team of eight stylists will be working on the evening with around 20 appointments available for booking in advance, all in aid of the charity.

Wilson said: "A client mentioned to me about the fundraising the health professionals were doing to make the centre more welcoming for the children when they come for appointments.

"The staff do an amazing job for the children and their families but the centre isn't very appealing.”

Although the centre and its services are funded by the NHS, team lead and occupational therapist Debbie Pearson said the organisation had set up a charity to raise funds for special projects.

"We recognise that NHS resources have to be spent judiciously and it's really wonderful that the staff we have, many of whom work full time, are still committed to doing the best they can for the children by fundraising in their own time."
