RESIDENTS at a Northallerton housing scheme for the elderly have raised their coffee cups to toast two long-serving trustees who are standing down.

Ten residents from Abbeyfield in South Parade – and their friends - looked on as bouquets of flowers were presented to Lorna Medlicott, who has been resident liaison officer for 17 years, and secretary Jean Purvis, who has been with the scheme for 20 years.

Set up in 1989, Abbeyfield, Northallerton, is one of 500 houses across the UK, which provides sheltered housing for the elderly. The houses are independent charities run by a volunteer committee.

Presenting the flowers, chairman Ian Parminter said: “We appreciate the efforts that you have both made in the past 17 and 20 years. It has been a privilege to work with you.”

The former vice-chair Christine Roddam said: “What you have done for Abbeyfield is just immense. Everyone owes you a huge debt of gratitude.”

The scheme has rare vacancies for elderly people who want to live independently. For details, call 01609 772337.
