THE generosity of a café owner has enabled women who have suffered domestic violence to enjoy some quality time with their friends and family.

After hearing about a women’s refuge run by Broadacres housing association in North Yorkshire, Leonardo Faro, owner of Casa Rustica in Barkers arcade, Northallerton, decided he wanted to do something to support the refuge.

He bought a giant Easter egg and raffled it in his café, raising £160 for the refuge.

The money has been used to buy discounted rail travel, a paddling pool for children to use in the refuge, a BBQ and food for the BBQ.

Staff at Broadacres say the donation has made a massive difference to the women living in the refuge, with several already having used the travel discount to take their children out on day trips.

Refuge co-ordinator Michaela Thomas said: “One woman took her children to the seaside and they had never seen the sea before so this was a fantastic, positive experience for them.

“The BBQ and paddling pool have also proven very popular and we are very grateful to Leo for such a kind donation.

“He did this totally out the blue and without being asked, so that makes it even more wonderful.”

Leonardo said: “I am so pleased the money we raised went to something so worthwhile and that everyone is enjoying the things that were bought for the refuge.

“Our customers were very generous and I would like to thank them for their support too.”
