LEGENDARY cricketer-turned-fundraiser Sir Ian “Beefy” Botham has provided a major boost to a life-saving hospital appeal.
The sporting superstar has made a £20,000 donation, through his charity foundation, to the appeal to provide an MRI scanner at the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton.
The Friends of the Friarage are working in partnership with South Tees Hospitals Charity to raise £2m for the scanner - an essential piece of medical equipment used to investigate almost any part of the body.
“Beefy’s Charity Foundation is delighted to support the Friarage MRI scanner appeal to provide this vital equipment,” said Sir Ian.
“It was a welcome choice and I am delighted to be able to help a worthwhile good cause which will benefit local people.”
The chairman of the Friends, Dr Upendra Somasundram said: “We are very grateful for Sir Ian Botham’s support and would like to thank him for this extremely generous donation.”
Over the years the Friends have raised several millions of pounds for the hospital, tirelessly helping staff and patients and supporting the wards and departments with their incredibly successful fundraising and profits from their successful and popular hospital shop.
