WITH the 70th anniversary of VE Day still fresh in people's minds, a North Yorkshire-based hospice is hoping music from the wartime era will strike a chord as it stages its latest fundraising event.

The Alan Owens Big Band will be paying tribute to the music of Glenn Miller with a night of his best hits, including In the Mood, Moonlight Serenade, Little Brown Jug and many more.

The event, on May 30 from 7.30pm, is being staged by Herriot Hospice Homecare at the Forum in Northallerton and will include jitterbug dancing, a raffle and refreshments and the charity will also be screening a new short film about its work.

Fundraising manager Christine Robinson said: “Glenn Miller was the best-selling recording artist during the Second World War and his music brought some much-welcomed cheer to millions of people across the world at that time.

“Having just marked the 70th anniversary of VE Day, we thought it was only fitting to stage an event which will enable people to listen to his wonderful music again, whilst also making a major contribution to the work of Herriot Hospice Homecare.”

Tickets, priced £10, are available from the Forum or herriothh.org.uk/online_shop. The event is being sponsored by local Herriot supporter Bill Waters, along with with Kwik-fit and Zetland Wines.
