THREE art students will be given some tips from a high-profile artist, who has teamed up with a family-run department store.

Matt Sewell is the author of the bestselling book Our Garden Birds and Our Songbirds and has illustrated for the V&A museum, The Guardian and Levis and exhibited in London, Manchester, Toyoko and Paris.

On May 16 he will be at Barkers department store in Northallerton to give an art master class to three students studying art at Northallerton College.

Meghan Browne, Heavenly Rose and Vicky Weighell were invited by the store for the event.

Some of Mr Sewell’s designs and illustrations can be seen in Barkers’ fashion department as he collaborated with Barbour on their current range of clothes.

Mr Sewell, 38, who is originally from Willington in County Durham and now lives in Shrewsbury, said: "I'm looking forward to my visit to Barkers and meeting the students and finding out about what they want to do. I'll chat to them about how I started and what I've done in my career.

"Getting your work out there is a hard thing and it is all about getting seen, so I'll give them some tip and tell them how I did it."

As well as meeting the students, Mr Sewell will be sketching in the store and will meet customers between 11am and 3pm.

Anyone who buys an item from the Barbour range will receive an original watercolour with their purchase.
