A CHARITABLE trust set up in memory of a Red Cap from Northallerton has received a donation from the family of a Girl Guide who benefitted from the foundation.

Girl Guide Hannah Sawyer, from Northallerton, approached John Hyde, who set up the Ben Hyde Memorial Trust after his son was killed in 2003 in Iraq while serving as a military policeman, early last year to ask for a donation towards an upcoming trip to Ukraine.

Miss Sawyer was to be part of a project to help grow the numbers of children and young people in the Association of Ukrainian Guides and was given £1,300 from the Ben Hyde Memorial Trust to help fund her trip.

But the project in Ukraine was cancelled due to political unrest in the country and Miss Sawyer was given a new assignment in Zambia, to take place this summer.

In way of a thank you to Mr Hyde and his wife Sandra, a charity collection at Miss Sawyer’s grandparent’s golden wedding anniversary made the Ben Hyde Memorial Trust one of its beneficiaries, and donated £350 last month.

Mr Hyde said: “Ben was a keen member of Northallerton Scouts for a number of years, enjoying several summer camps and the challenges outdoor life presented.

“Since Ben gained so much from his time as a Scout the trust has been pleased to support a number of projects involving Scouts and Guides since it was formed in 2005.

“We agreed with the Guide Council that Hannah could carry the grant over to fund a project this year in Zambia and wish her the best of luck.”
