THE future is looking bright for charity shop boss Becky Wallis, manager of the Herriot Hospice Homecare store in Northallerton.

She recently completed her NVQ level two in customer service and is now undertaking a level three qualification in management.

And the 21-year-old has also just bought her first house with partner Jason and young daughter Ella.

Ms Wallis started working for Herriot Hospice Homecare just over a year ago, initially on maternity cover at the charity’s store in Thirsk.

But when the managerial vacancy at Northallerton arose she was asked to take over the reins as the charity’s youngest manager - and has never looked back.

“I left school and became a hairdresser but I realised it wasn’t for me and I spent the next couple of years doing a range of part-time jobs and working 60 hours a week,” she said.

“I never saw myself working in a shop but I really enjoyed working in the Herriot store in Thirsk and when I was asked to manage the Northallerton store I jumped at the opportunity.

“It has been a big learning curve for me as I have to manage 18 volunteers who work shifts at the shop, as well as sorting clothes, arranging donations and cashing up.

“I love working here and being able to gain qualifications at the same time has been fantastic.”
