A MAN has been given a community order after assaulting his ex-partner in a jealous rage when he saw a van parked outside her home.

Martin Goff, 26, from Friarage Mount in Northallerton pleaded guilty to assault.

At Northallerton Magistrates Court today (Monday, February 23), magistrates heard how on at 11pm on January 11, the woman heard a knock on her door and saw Goff with another man stood outside her home.

She went outside, locking her door behind her and threading the key through the letterbox. Goff demanded to know who was in the house as a van was parked outside. His fists were clenched by his side and he appeared to be getting “very angry”.

The man with Goff tried to calm him down, but he became abusive to his ex-partner, demanding to see the son he had with the woman.

He then raised his fist to her, in what he told police was a push to the face, cutting her lip.

The woman went back inside and Goff shouted outside how he was going to kill her and set her house on fire.

In an impact statement, the victim said during their relationship, Goff had damaged her house and property and assaulted her and her neighbour. The relationship ended in October 2013.

Defending, Alan Meehan, said his client had ended the relationship and was now engaged to another woman with whom he already has one child and another on the way.

He said he also had four other children from another previous relationship, who he saw fortnightly, but had not seen his son with the victim for 18 months. He had engaged solicitors over child contact.

Magistrates imposed a community order to complete 180 hours of unpaid work.

They also imposed a restraining order and ordered him to pay £85 costs and £65 surcharge.
