TWO young athletes fought their way through mud, wind and rain when they competed against some of the best cross-country runners in North Yorkshire.

The teenagers from Northallerton College, students Chloe Hunt, 14, and Charlotte Knowles, 16, won through the area competition to be invited take part in the North Yorkshire county trials staged in Whitby.

From a field of about 80 athletes Charlotte, who lives in South Otterington, took a creditable fifth place in the 4km race while Chloe, of Ainderby Steeple, was hard on her heels and close behind in eighth position.

“Cross-country is very rewarding – at the end,” said Charlotte afterwards. “I hope to continue running and would love to compete at county level again.”

The students, who have both enjoyed running since their primary school days, are also looking forward to the summer when they will be taking part in further athletics, including the 800m and 1500m races.

The head of PE at Northallerton College, Anna Harvey said: “Running in these conditions shows incredible physical and mental strength and we are delighted with the girls’ performance.”
