A WELL-KNOWN North Yorkshire company which started life delivering ice to fish shops in the 1920s has reached a milestone.

Removals and haulage firm Archers of Northallerton is marking its 95th anniversary this year. The family-run firm began in the 1920s, before the era of refrigerators, and made money making deliveries of ice around Northallerton.

Now, alongside its original removals work, the haulage firm also specialises in moving very large objects such as portable cabins and mobile homes.

Owner Ken Archer said: “The vehicles got bigger and the world got smaller. But it’s still the same principal, you pick it up, then take it all out and put it back again somewhere else.”

The firm was started up in the 1920s by Ken’s grandfather Percy and now the fourth generation of Archers – Ken’s sons Geoffrey and Paul – also work at the family firm.
