LOCAL sporting heroes have been recognised for their commitment and passion.

More than 140 people attended the Tour de France themed Hambleton Sports Awards, which included a speech from Danny Hart, 2011 downhill mountain bike world champion.

Hambleton District Council chairman Cllr John Prest said: “The annual Hambleton Sports awards recognise sports performers, coaches and volunteers for their contribution to their chosen sport, and the recognition they bring to the district.”

Hambleton District Council organised the event with support from North Yorkshire Sport and was hosted by Cllr Bridget Fortune.

Winners include junior sportsman Alex Millar; junior sportswoman Jasmine Dixon; sportsperson Karen Poole; Thirsk Hockey U14 boys; Northallerton Boxing Club; coach Trevor Bosomworth; Hambleton Service to Sport winner Peter Watson; 123 Gold Inspire Award winners Rebecca Boakes and Jasmine Harrison.

North Yorkshire Sport winners were sportsperson Jessie Roberts; North Riding Eagles Volleyball Club; Bedale Junior U16s girls football; Thirsk White Horse Swim Club; coach Anthony Laffan; Bev Longthorne for service to sport; and lifetime achievement award to Bernard Goddard.

The West Tanfield Fund, which helped bring the Tour de France to the village, and Tom Riordon, chief executive of Leeds City Council, who was behind the delivery of the tour in Yorkshire, both received a special award for event of the year.
