POLICE are appealing for information on an attempted burglary in which they believe the suspects may have escaped the scene by entering a river.

At about 12.15am on Saturday, August 30, it is believed burglars were disturbed at a house on The Green in Maunby near Northallerton.

They escaped before managing to break into the house.

Police say when they left they headed in the direction of the River Swale and may have entered the water, as a witness believes they heard splashing sounds shortly after the time of the attempted break-in.

Detective Constable Gary SmithOwen, of Northallerton CID, said: “If you noticed any suspicious activity in the Maunby area around the time of the burglary, I ask that you contact the police straight away.

“If you saw anyone who may have been in the River Swale, I ask that you get in touch as soon as possible.”

Anyone who can assist this enquiry should contact Northallerton CID on 101 and ask for Gary SmithOwen. Alternatively, information can be emailed to; gary.smithowen@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk
