TOUR de France fever helped Hambleton’s first-ever bike ability day turn into a big success.

More than 50 budding cyclists took part in the event in Northallerton to check out the variety of pedal-powered vehicles that are available.

The riders were able to try out around 25 special adapted bikes ranging from hand cranked machines and recumbent bikes to tricycles and wheelchair transporters.

The event, held at the Hambleton Leisure Centre, was organised by Hambleton District Council’s disability sport officer Joe Mckechnie.

“It was a fantastic event enjoyed by all participants who attended,” he said afterwards.

“Everyone was fully included and given the opportunity to try a wide range of adaptive bikes for free in a supportive and friendly environment, with the opportunity to have fun and socialise.”

The district council’s community leisure officer David Earl said “We are very pleased that so many people came along and thoroughly enjoyed the event.

“The cycling ability day was one of a series of events and regular club sessions that we provide - aimed at encouraging more people with a disability to take part in sport and physical activity. “

He added: “We are also on the lookout for volunteers to help at our events or club sessions.”

The event finished off with a BBQ at the Mencap Centre in Northallerton.
