A CAMPAIGN has been launched to safeguard a thriving business park from a large housing development.

Colburn Town Council is urging residents, employees and businesses to actively oppose proposals by Linden Homes to build 92 houses on land located at Colburn Business Park, Chartermark Way.

The site has been employment land for over ten years, but councillors fear the building of houses will encourage businesses to find alternative locations outside Richmondshire.

A statement from the council said: “It is extremely worrying as the original concept of the park was that local people would be employed. Any potential loss of jobs is concerning for local residents and totally unacceptable.”

Since the upgrading of the A1, new businesses have shown interest in the park and current businesses are considering expansion. However there is concern they will change their minds.

The statement added: “When the A1 is completed the land within the business park will be a prime location for additional businesses and allow economic growth within Colburn. Now that the park has become an attractive proposition, CTC does not want it to be overtaken by yet another housing development.

“The business park is home to a wide range of business sectors using much needed office space and it is important the area is able to offer diverse employment opportunities on this unique site.”

The Richmondshire Local Plan aims to ensure “the right development happens in the right places,” and identifies Colburn as an area of significant growth for housing and employment.
