SEVERAL wounded, injured and sick veterans have been accepted into the Guild of Rocking Horse Makers after showcasing their woodwork skills.

The former servicemen made rocking horses in the Phoenix House Help for Heroes Recovery Centre wood workshop in Catterick Garrison as part of their recovery journey.

The horses, which would sell for £1,800, have been recognised by the Guild of Rocking Horse Makers who have made them honorary life members.

The veterans were presented with their membership certificates on the final day of the course at Phoenix House by Guild member Jane Cook, managing director of the Rocking Horse Shop in York, which has supported the project.

She said: “It’s brilliant the rocking horses have acted as a form of recovery to help our heroes and they have done such an amazing job.

“They are all hand carved and most importantly they are all different to reflect their individual thoughts.

“It’s important to support our heroes when they need help as it’s hard for most people to relate to what they have been through.”

The shop worked closely with the project, as veterans sent photos and updates of their rocking horses at various stages.

Help for Heroes offers support to those who have suffered life-changing injuries and illnesses while serving our country.

The charity found creative work to be beneficial to mental health.

Jason Midgley is a former serviceman who took part in the project, spending 120 hours on his masterpiece.

He said: “The course has been brilliant and I have really enjoyed it. The rocking horse is beautiful which shows all the hours have paid off.”

Phoenix House offers a range of services including educational courses, career advice, support for medical appointments, participation in sporting activities and guidance in health and wellbeing.

Bob Marshall, course leader and Help for Heroes volunteer, said: “The only skills needed are to turn up and be motivated to want to do it.

“They each have their own story and have been knocked back in life but being part of a project like this makes them feel talented and worthy.

“I have seen personality changes in every one of them. I’m sure this has been a catalyst and will give them the confidence to do other things.”
