PRIMARY school children are to feature in a short film which will commemorate the First World War armistice a century ago.

Youngsters at Carnagill Community Primary School in Catterick Garrison took part in an event in conjunction with the Army Benevolent Fund and spent a day immersed in learning about the First World War.

They learnt about 100 years of women in the military and then First World War re-enactor Richie Parsons staged a recruiting process with the children in the main hall.

Children were given the chance to wear the uniform and take a pledge of allegiance to King George V.

They also had a chance to build a bunker with sandbags, plant crops and work in a recreated field hospital and munitions factory.

Finally the children learnt about the First World War armistice and took part in a tea party to commemorate the end of the war.

The Army Benevolent Fund (ABF) arranged for the event to be recorded for a short film by Awol TV. The film will be broadcast on its website to commemorate the First World War armistice anniversary next year.

Red, White and Blue day, set up by ABF, is held every October to raise money in support of armed services charities.

For 2017 the day will be celebrating women in the forces.

Headteacher Elaine Young said: “Not only were we delighted to support this charity, our children have learned a great deal about life in the past. We look forward to supporting this charity in the future.”

All the food and bunting was donated by the ABF and prepared by the North Yorkshire County Council catering service.
