A PENSIONER is appealing for the return of her beloved cat after he hitched a ride in a workman’s van.

Cindy Howard said Basil has been missing for almost four weeks after sneaking into the van in the village of Harmby, near Leyburn.

When it finally stopped in Colburn, near Catterick, Basil bolted into nearby fields as soon as the doors were opened.

Despite extensive searches and various appeals, he has not been seen since and the 75-year-old is desperate for his return.

“He is such a beautiful cat, and I have had him three years from being a kitten.

“When my last cat and dog died, I swore I wouldn’t have any more because the pain of losing them is too much – but my granddaughter’s partner found him in a car at the scrap yard where he works.

“She couldn’t take him in because of her young children and she asked if I wanted him – at first I said no but then I met him and he was so beautiful and is so affectionate.”

Basil often visits neighbouring gardens in Harmby, and had wandered into a workman’s van next door to Mrs Howard’s home.

The contractor discovered the cat when he arrived home in Colburn but was not able to catch him before he jumped out towards nearby fields.

Members of Mrs Howards family have been searching the area and appealing for information on Facebook, but despite several possible sightings he has not been found.

Mrs Howard says Basil was a wonderful companion as her husband works long hours so she is desperate to have him home in time for Christmas.

She said: “It would be fantastic to have him home, it would be the best present. It is just so hard not knowing what has happened to him.”

Mrs Howard said Basil is a very fluffy, pale golden cat, and is named after fox puppet Basil Brush because of his bushy tail.

She fears someone may have taken him in and not realise he is missing – and is appealing for Colburn residents to keep an eye out for him.

She added: “Someone must know where he is. He is microchipped and neutered, and we have informed local pet rescue services.”
