A REGIMENT whose battle honours include the battle of Waterloo and the Charge of the Light Brigade will celebrate its tercentenary in true military style.

The Light Dragoons will hold a spectacular parade in Catterick Garrison on Saturday morning, featuring horses, tanks and armoured vehicles, to mark their 300th anniversary.

And during the event at Gaza Barracks, a special message will be read out from King Abdullah of Jordan, the current Colonel-in-Chief – a role once held by Diana, Princess of Wales.

Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel James Senior said: “To mark this very special occasion the Regiment has invited retired officers and soldiers from the Regimental Association, as well as our families, and civic leaders to a weekend of celebrations.

“This will include a parade, an exhibition of historical vehicles, demonstrations of current military capability, and service of thanksgiving in our local church.”

The Light Dragoons was formed from an amalgamation of historic regiments whose roots date back to the early 18th-century.

The regiment assumed its current form in 1992 and has served in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as Bosnia Herzegovina on peacekeeping duties.

The regiment recruits from and has strong ties to the North East – Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and County Durham – as well as South Yorkshire.
