FIRE crews were twice called to a fish and chip shop after fire broke out on Tuesday.

The incident was at The Chippy, on Low Green, in Catterick Village, North Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue warned people the incident was likely to cause traffic problems in the centre of the village.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reel jets to tackle the fire.

Shortly before 11.30am, the incident was declared over. However, some crews remained on scene ventilating the building and making it safe.

But at 1pm firefighters had to revisit the scene again to put out a further fire, which took just over an hour to deal with.

Nearby resident Linda Meller said: "The first fire happened at 10.30am this morning. I thought it was in my house as all the smoke had blown inside.

"It was thick black smoke and it was coming from the extractor. The fire crews arrived and seemed to have quenched the fire but later I heard the sirens again and looked out to see flames shooting from the extractor chimney about three foot high."

A shop employee said on Facebook that no one was injured in the incident.

"Everyone is fine. Staff and local residents evacuated safely," she said. "Not sure how long we'll be closed for. But we'll keep you all posted.

"Thank you for all the concern and well wishes. We will be open as soon as possible and will still be the best around."

There was damage to an extractor fan and chimney inside the building, as well as smoke damage.
