A RECOVERY centre for wounded, injured and sick service personnel veterans is appealing for volunteering opportunities for those in its care.

Rosie O’Connell, volunteer project manager at Help for Heroes Phoenix House recovery centre in Catterick Garrison, said she had been trying to find placements for veterans at North East food banks and homeless shelters - but that none had needed any assistance.

She said: “We would love to send a small team of veterans out to help charities at Christmas, even for just a couple of hours, but so far haven’t found any needing the help.

“If anyone knows of some festive charity work our guys could get involved in, please get in touch.”

She said the service personnel and veterans in the charity’s care were keen to give back at Christmas – but she added that often it helped them realise their capabilities in their transition into civilian life.

She said: “They realise they have lots of skills they gained through the Armed Forces and gives them a confidence boost.”
