A BAKE off challenge for Army chefs has seen almost 50 bakers battle it out for glory in a Christmas cake competition.

Chefs from around Catterick Garrison have been taking part in the annual event for around 11 years – and Captain Mark Catherwood said it is serious business among competitors who often spend weeks perfecting their cakes and decorations.

The event took place on Tuesday (December 1) in the garrison and was open to chefs from all ranks and regiments.

He said: “There are three categories – novice for the private to lance corporal level; junior for the corporal level and senior covering all those from staff sergeant upwards.

Judges included Colonel Mike Butterwick, Deputy Commander 4th Infantry Brigade, and Lieutenant Colonel Mark Steed, Commander of Catterick Garrison, who had the difficult task of electing a winner.

Staff Sergeant Mark Wrightham was crowned the overall winner for his three tier creation featuring snowmen, gingerbread men, lollypops and a giant present as the top tier.

Capt Catherwood said: “The cakes were judged on creativity, technical work, taste, and even the scale of Christmas trees.

“There are prizes for the winners including catering books, piping sets and other culinary items – there are also serious bragging rights that go with the title of overall winner.”
