VETERANS who are on the road to recovery from mental and physical illness or injury are preparing to brave the catwalk in a fundraising fashion show.

Help for Heroes-run Phoenix House recovery centre in Catterick Garrison holds a fashion show every year, which showcases not only the modelling ability of its centre users and their families – but also highlights the inspirational stories of the men and women who have been wounded in serving their country.

Chris Yates is one veteran who will be taking part in the event tomorrow (Tuesday, October 6) for the first time, and on Friday had his final suit fitting at Leggs boutique in Darlington.

Mr Yates, 30, a former Royal Engineer, had to leave the Army after a lorry tailgate crushed him and left him with prolapsed discs, narrowed spinal canal and severe nerve pain together with paralysed bladder and kidney damage.

Unable to come to terms with his injuries, Mr Yates — a father-of-three — fell into depression, but thanks to Phoenix House he has found relief through sport and the support the centre offers.

He said: “I missed out on doing the fashion show in previous years so I am looking forward to having a go this year. I’m looking forward to the atmosphere – I used to do a bit of modelling when I was a child but I’m not sure if that will help.”

He added: “When I left the Army I found it very hard, and I’m still coming to terms with the change – the accident was a massive blow for me.

“But with Phoenix House I’ve got a recumbent bike and have also enjoyed archery and wheelchair rugby.”

The fashion show starts at 7.30pm at Phoenix House. Tickets are available from lucy-wray@helpforheroes.org.uk, 01748-843148, and Leggs Darlington. Entry is £10 including glass of wine, and there will be stalls and a raffle.
