SOLDIERS from a regiment that was formed to tackle escalating public disorder and terrorism in Northern Ireland have raised its flag at its new headquarters in Catterick Garrison.

The 1st Regiment Royal Military Police ceremony at Gaza Barracks followed 14 of its soldiers completing a sponsored 750-mile march - carrying their Regimental flag - across Europe to mark their withdrawal from Germany.

The Redcaps regiment, which has supported the 1st Armoured Division in Germany since 1995 and provided a policing service to garrison commanders, has been relocated as part of the Army 2020 reorganisation.

The exercise, which was completed within eight days, was set to test leadership, teamwork, mental endurance, fitness, navigation and motivation.

It saw two-men teams completing eight miles in less than two hours while carrying a weight of 17kg before handing over the flag to the next waiting pair.

The soldiers repeated this 24-hours-a-day, equating to roughly 94 of the regiment's annual fitness tests back to back.

After arriving at the North Yorkshire base, the soldiers presented the regimental flag to the Royal Military Police’s Provost Marshall, Brigadier Bill Warren.
