ORGANISERS of a charity golf tournament in aid of Help for Heroes are appealing to teams to take part in the event.

Rockliffe Hall in Hurworth, near Darlington, is hosting the event on Wednesday, July 1 in support of Help for Heroes, which will see teams of veterans from Phoenix House recovery centre taking part.

Mo Usman, manager of Phoenix House, in Catterick Garrison, said it was the first Help for Heroes-led golf tournament to be held in the north of England.

“We are therefore determined that it will be a huge success and are sure that, with Rockliffe Hall as the event venue, it will be just that,” he said.

The day will start at 11.30am for registration and breakfast, with the driving range open for practice, and the shotgun start will be at 1.30pm.

At 7pm there will be a reception with prizes and an auction, followed by dinner. Four ball entry cost to take part in the event is £600.

The Rockliffe Hall team have been supporters of the charity since making Phoenix House its charity partner for last summer’s European Senior Tour, English Senior Open.

As part of the sporting event Rockliffe Hall invited a team of wounded, injured and sick veterans to take part in the Pro Am competition prior to the main tournament.

For the three months leading up to it, three veterans trained with Rockliffe Hall’s PGA golf professionals to bring them up to standard.

Mr Usman added: “All of them thoroughly enjoyed the experience and have continued to play in their own time - so we will offer places in a team to other individuals who will benefit from taking part in our Charity Golf Day as part of their road to recovery.”

Eamonn Elliott, chief executive of Rockliffe Hall, said: “The team from Phoenix House were brilliant at last year’s English Senior Open at Rockliffe Hall and we’re so pleased that they’ve continued with their game.

“It’s great being able to welcome the charity back and to be able to be the host venue for this prestigious golf tournament. I know how much effort everyone puts in so it’ll be a great day for sure.”
