A TALK on Roman Catterick, 70 years of Rescue: 70 years of Research is being held at Thornton le Street Village Hall near Thirsk on Saturday, April 25.

The speaker is Dr Pete Wilson, the foremost authority on Roman Catterick and a distinguished archaeologist based in North Yorkshire. The talk will give a definitive description of the site from the early excavation work to the present day.

He was responsible for major excavations at Catterick in the 1980’s and 1990’s which he published in 2002, and was also involved in earlier work undertaken by the late Professor John Wacher and others which resulted in a major two volume report; Cataractonium Roman Catterick and its Hinterland, Excavations and research 1958 to 1997.

Dr Wilson has also excavated sites at Cawthorn Camps on the North York Moors, Groundwell Ridge Roman villa in Swindon, and Lullingstone Roman villa in Kent, and has published a series of papers on the Roman Army in Yorkshire. He has worked for English Heritage since 1981.
