A HELP for Heroes recovery centre is to host a start of the charity’s annual fundraising bike ride – and 50 places are up for grabs to ride alongside wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans.

Phoenix House recovery centre in Catterick Garrison will be the starting point of Help for Heroes’ Hero Ride on the fourth day of the event as it makes its way from Edinburgh to Windsor.

Cyclists are able to join 20 wounded, injured or sick personnel and veterans from Phoenix House – some of whom will be using recumbent or hand-bikes - for the 260 mile ride to show their support and raise cash for the charity along the way.

Phoenix House manager Mo Usman promised a rousing send-off for the party leaving the centre on Wednesday, June 17.

He said: “From here, cyclists will enjoy a five-day ride to test and delight in equal measure and share the challenges and triumphs with new-found friends.

“We know from past experience that Hero Ride can have a life-changing effect – both physically and mentally - on those we are supporting through recovery.

“To be part of that important journey is equally exhilarating for members of the public who cycle alongside them. It is something they will never forget.”

Ten miles before crossing the finishing line, riders will meet up with others coming in from Help for Heroes’ centres at Plymouth, Colchester and Wiltshire for a service of remembrance at the Air Forces Memorial.

The 2,000-strong cycle peloton will then sweep past Windsor Castle and onto the town’s racecourse for a barbecue and family celebrations on Sunday, June 21.

The registration fee for Hero Ride North 260 is £95. Participants are asked to raise a minimum of £1,350 of which £600 is to cover costs of food and accommodation.
