A FACILITY that offers mental health support to former servicemen and women is highlighting its projects to mark Mental Health Awareness Week.

The Beacon, in Catterick Garrison, is using the week, which runs from Monday, May 12 to Sunday, May 18, to promote the work it does to help veterans get back on track.

The centre, run by Riverside housing group, offers individual support and can both refer clients to specialist health services and offer on-site therapeutic activities.

Clients at the Beacon have access to a health and wellbeing centre, therapeutic treatment room, therapeutic bakery, allotment, gym and bicycles. Volunteers also run woodcarving sessions.

The Veterans Artisan Bakery, based within the Beacon, offers therapeutic baking sessions and training opportunities.

Elaine Walton, Riverside’s health and wellbeing specialist support worker, said: “The team at the Beacon work with single ex-service personnel, some with a range of mental health issues ranging from depression and anxiety to post-traumatic stress disorder.

“A female veteran who came to us after being involved in acts of anti-social behaviour was later diagnosed with PTSD.

“While at the Beacon, she got involved with a writing competition and worked to overcome her mental health issues and has now moved on into independent accommodation.”

Riverside’s services at the Beacon are delivered in partnership and with support from local councils, charities and outreach services.
