A SERIOUS crash involving multiple vehicles resulted in the A1M being closed in North Yorkshire.

The collision took place on the northbound carriageway between the Boroughbridge turn-off at Junction 48 and Dishforth at Junction 49 at 11.30am.

The crash involved four vehicles - a lorry, a van and two cars. Another car and a trailer also sustained minor damage.

Police say none of those involved in the collision suffered serious injuries.

The central reservation barrier was also damaged in the crash.

During the afternoon six-mile tailbacks formed along the A1(M) near the crash site on the northbound carriageway as emergency crews worked to make the scene safe and clear the carriageway.

Queuing traffic was being released via the northbound hard shoulder, but police are advising motorists to avoid the area.

The Northern Echo:

North Yorkshire Police posted online: “The road is currently closed northbound at J48 and is expected to remain closed for some time.

“A diversion has been put in place but motorists are advised to avoid the area.”

By 4.30pm, police had handed over the site to the Highways Agency, who were managing traffic on the major road and working towards opening more lanes to clear tailbacks.
