RAIL fans had some stomping good fun to raise almost £3,500 for a major new cancer centre in North Yorkshire.

The Swale Valley Stompers raised the cash at their third annual Jazz and Real Ale Train to raise funds for the new Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre at the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton.

The fun started on the platform at Leeming Bar with music and dancing, before guests hopped on the train and enjoyed a picnic and drinks on a round trip on the Wensleydale Railway.

Spokesman Peter Edmonds said: “Once again this year’s Jazz Train was supported by our generous local community, a supportive volunteer railway, and some sterling work from volunteers.

"That, coupled with some excellent weather, meant a marvellous evening was had by all, and a record-breaking total was raised thanks to everyone's hard work and generosity."

The Jazz and Real Ale Train has now raised more than £8,000 for local people affected by cancer.
