A SQUADRON is marking its special place in the history of the RAF with a centenary celebration.

100 squadron which has been based at RAF Leeming since 1995 is holding the event at the base near Bedale in March. It was one of the very first squadrons created, as part of the original Royal Flying Corps before the RAF, which marks it’s centenary next year, was officially created.

Originally established in February, 1917 at Hingham in Norfolk the squadron served specifically as a night bombing unit and was mobilised in March, 1917 crossing to France as the war waged in Europe.

Then it flew Royal Aircraft Factory F E 2Bs beginning operations in April when eleven FE2bs attacked an airfield dropping over 130 bombs and setting four aircraft hangars on fire. They later converted to heavy bombers tackling long range sorties over industrial sites in Germany. An aircraft from 100 squadron was the last in war time to return to base on the night of the Armistice from a raid.

In the second world war the squadron was originally deployed in the Far East against advancing Japanese forces when personnel were taken prisoner. Later they were involved in raids against Nuremberg in Germany and as part of bomber commands strategic role.

Since the war they have served in Ireland, Malaysia, Kenya and at RAF Marham and Finningley before transferring to Leeming.

A spokesman said they are determined to honour the history of the unit and celebrate the centenary.

“As we celebrate our Centenary year, we reflect on the successes of our predecessors, show-case our current role and plan to begin our second century in style.

As such 100 Sqn are hosting the centenary event at RAF Leeming on 18th March 2017. The day event will include: capability demonstrations both on the ground and in the air; a formal sunset parade and flypast. During the evening there will be a hangar party with various live music entertainment and a gala dinner,” he added.

The squadron are particularly keen to contact RAF members who have served with 100 squadron over the years.

“ We would be delighted if any ex-squadron members or associates are able to attend the event. Normal ticket prices are expected to be around £50 which includes food, drink and access to all activities,”added the spokesman.
