AN RAF man has won a top award for his dedication to all areas of service life – using his free time to train potential personnel of the future as well as helping to keep history alive.

Flight Sergeant Rich White has been presented with the Wing Commander Bye Sword, which is given in memory of Wing Commander David Bye, who lost his battle against cancer in 2005 at the age of 47.

It is presented each year to the junior officer or senior non-commissioned officer at RAF Leeming who has made the most significant contribution to life on station and/or the local community.

On top of his duties at the base Flt Sgt White , 32, is also committed to the Air Cadet Organisation as one of the most experienced instructors on the junior leaders course.

He also serves with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight as loadmaster for the famous Dakota and has also been instrumental in the recent success of the Station Karting Club, stepping in as Officer Commanding to help secure the funds for eight brand new karts.
