A FORMULA One racing car helped get a new store and service station on the Great North Road off to a flying start.
The bright red Ferrari was among the highlights of a family fun day held to mark the official opening of the new development on the A1 (M) junction 51 at Leeming Bar.
The family-run retailer Exelby Services has invested £5 million in developing the site after closing their former store and fuel station just three miles down the road following upgrades to the road in the area.
The Mace-branded 3,000 sq ft store now employs 25 members of staff from the local community.
Operations Director Rob Exelby said: “We have two local competitors but our focus on offering a fast and efficient refuelling facility with convenience and service offers, has seen us garner tremendous support from the local community as well as the more transient traveller.”
