POPPY appeal organisers in Bedale, Aiskew and the surrounding area say they’ve been overwhelmed by the response to this year’s event with the final total over £10,000.

Organiser Mike Lowe said it was the highest amount ever raised, up over 30 per cent on last year.

“We would like to thank everyone who was involved, and who donated, it really is tremendous. We did do extra events putting up poppies around the town with the names of every person named on the war memorials from the First and Second World Wars in this area. I think because it was the Centenary of the First World War there was greater support and interest.

“We particularly want to thank Bedale Primary School who through HMS Heroes were a great help assisting us in our poppy collections in the town. The final total was £10,339, we really can’t express how grateful we are to everyone,” added Mr Lowe.
