AN airman from the region has been honoured with a prestigious award for his professionalism, his drive for excellence and his outstanding dedication to the local community.

Flight Sergeant Robert Burke, part of the navigational aids flight at RAF Leeming’s 90 Signals Unit, was presented with the Wing Commander Bye Sword.

The sword is given in memory of Wing Commander David Bye, who lost his battle against cancer in 2005 at the age of 47 and is presented annually to the junior Officer or senior NCO who has made the most significant contribution to life on station and/or the local community.

Flt Sgt Burke was put forward by Flight Lieutenant Hannah Jenkins for planning and implementing a large scale change within the navigational aids flight and also leading a major re-structuring project.

He was described as an excellent technician and a first-class leader and manager.

In addition he is enthusiastically committed to coaching the under-11s Bedale football side, giving up evenings and weekends for their matches.

Wing Commander Bye’s widow Ros attended the ceremony when Flt Sgt Burke was presented with the sword by Group Captain Steve Reeves.

“It is great to be recognised for doing a job I really enjoy,” said Flt Sgt Burke.

“I like to do my bit for the community. I believe people should give something back. I volunteer now in all the activities I myself enjoyed when I was a youngster. Receiving the award has been made more poignant with Ros being here, I really hope she thinks I am deserving of it.”
