A community bakery which hit the headlines with a BBC documentary is on the move.

Bread Actually started out at the Wensleydale Railway Station in Bedale, but has now moved next door to premises at the Big Sheep, Little Cow theme farm.

Group Chairman Carol Clark, who runs Big Sheep, Little Cow said they needed extra space to run bread making classes.

“We had a couple of classes at the station but space was so tight it was impossible," she said, "and we have had a lot of interest. It is completely separate from the farm.”

Its story was told in the BBC’s The Big Bread Experiment and later also featured on Countryfile, it’s now run with three staff and 12 volunteers providing an extensive range of breads, including wholemeal, harvester, spelt and sourdough loaves, poppy seed bread, rosemary and pepper loaves, bread rolls and tasty treats, including flapjack, brownies and carrot cake.

Mrs Clark added:”We do have quite a regular customer base, it isn’t huge it is still modest, we do need another big push in terms of the development of the bakery, and we are working on that. “We do supply Thorp Perrow and Swinithwaite Farm shop, plus the markets at Leyburn and Masham.”

The station building is now being run as a café by Donna Stevenson, she’s been working hard to open this week for the start of the Wensleydale railways summer holiday schedule.

Donna had worked at a café in Bedale, but when she heard the station premises were available was keen to work for herself.

“It’s a café and coffee shop, we’ll be targeting passengers on the railway but encouraging people going through Bedale too. Because we are on the platform it’ll be the ideal place for train enthusiasts and passengers to stop off for refreshments,” she added.
