SHEEP and history are the themes of new addresses for one of the biggest developments ever seen in Hambleton district.

Local people were asked to choose street names for the new North Northallerton estate where up to 1,000 homes will eventually be built.

Council leader Mark Robson said they had legal responsibility to ensure all streets and properties in the area are named and numbered correctly.

He added :"To make it harder still we are unable to use duplicate names that already exist in the district, such as references to the Battle of the Standard, saints, tree names or names of living people or people who were alive during living memory.

"So last summer we asked the local community for suggestions to reflect the history and geography of the area or animals and flowers with the best names held in a directory ready to use for future developments in the Northallerton and Brompton areas.”

The suggestions were put to builders Taylor Wimpey and Persimmon Homes who are developing the North Northallerton Thurston Park site.

Taylor Wimpey chose breeds of sheep with the names Portland Road, Cotswold Street, Cheviot Close, Dalesbred Row, Herdwick Row and Swaledale Row selected. Persimmon Homes chose the history of the area with Friars Close, Runnymede Way, Alvertune Road and Brickside Way selected.

The main road through the development which will link Darlington Road and Stokesley Road, has been named North Moor Road after another suggestion by a member of the public.
