A LORRY driver has been killed in an accident which has closed a major part of the A1M for most of the day.

An articulated lorry and a car transporter collided at junction 50 near Baldersby at 7am on Tuesday morning.

The accident resulted in a massive fire.

"The collision occurred between an articulated lorry and a car transporter, which were both travelling northbound. Sadly the driver of the articulated lorry died at the scene. Police are not yet in a position to release his identity," said a spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police.

"Officers from the Major Collision Investigation Team are appealing for any witnesses who were travelling along that section of the road, who saw either vehicle prior to the collision, or anyone who may have captured dash cam footage to contact them."

The road was closed for most of Tuesday but reopened at approximately 8pm.
