A NEW “teapot” ten pence has been produced in a collaboration with the Royal Mint and one of Yorkshire’s most famous tea rooms.

The Royal Mint’s new limited edition 10p coin features a steaming pot of tea in its design and will appear in tills across Bettys’ six tea rooms in Northallerton, York, Harrogate and Ilkley.

The ten pence pieces have been produced to coincide with National Tea Day, which takes place on Saturday, April 21.

They were created as part of The Great British Coin Hunt, celebrating everything that makes Britain great, and are a nod to the nation’s love of tea. Another coin featuring the Angel of the North has also been produced.

Those wanting to have one of the teapot 10p pieces need to visit a Bettys Tea Room or shop this weekend.

Una Heron, Bettys head of catering and retail said: “We’re really excited to be teaming up with The Royal Mint on this very special coin hunt.

“The new 10p coins are beautiful and, of course, we particularly like the T coin. What could be more quintessentially British than tea at Bettys?”

Additional coins launched as part of The Great British Coin Hunt include ones dedicated to fish and chips, cricket, the Loch Ness monster and even queuing. The 26 coin designs map out the A-Z of what makes Britain great – from the Angel of the North to a zebra crossing.

Accompanying the physical coin collection, The Royal Mint has introduced the Great British Coin Hunt app, allowing coin hunters to create a digital collection of the coins they find in their change.

Users can download the app for free from the App Store or Google Play, to scan the coin with their camera, unlocking exclusive content and placing their coin into a digital folder. They can also link the app to their social media to share the treasures they find in their pockets and wallets.

There will also be a heatmap within the app, showing where different coins are being found around the country and directing users to swap shops where they can trade coins with fellow collectors.

The entire collection has been rolling out into circulation across the country and will be available at selected Post Offices.

A collectors’ folder, and silver proof and uncirculated versions of the 10p coins are available to purchase from The Royal Mint website. For more information visit; royalmint/coinhunt
