A NORTH Yorkshire charity has been selected for a prestigious Royal award.

The Duke of York's Community Initiative is an award presented to community projects based in Yorkshire.

And the York Blind and Partially Sighted Society - which celebrates its 40th birthday next year - was chosen following a rigorous selection process and a visit by assessors late last year.

Charity chief executive Ashley Mason said: "The assessment process was tough, and I am so pleased all our hard work has been recognised in this way.

"My team put so much effort into supporting those with sight loss, enabling them to live as independently as possible with dignity.

The award will be presented by Prince Andrew in April.
