THE York Food and Festival is coming of age as it gets underway today.

The event, which runs until October 10, is celebrating its 21st anniversary and up to 400,000 are expected to attend over its ten days.

New for this year will be hands-on cookery activities daily for both adults and children. Available to buy is the “cookery passport” which includes daily activities such as bread and pasta making and chocolate tasting with York Cocoa House. These will take place at the new “Food Hub” on St Sampson’s Square and at the Shambles Market.

The Food Hub will be the heart of the festival’s programme. Not only will it host a market of small food producers on the two weekends it is also the site of the Macmillan Coffee Morning, demonstrations and pop-up restaurants.

And some top chefs will be attending from Michelin Star winners like Andrew Pern, Tommy Banks, and James Mackenzie to Great British Menu alumni Steph Moon.

The Festival is expanding the footprint of markets and street food from Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square, its traditional home, through the redeveloped Shambles Market and, on both Saturdays, down Fossgate.
